A hospital has an internal database called the Chargemaster database. This database sets the “retail” price for its services.

Rarely, does someone actually get charged the retail price for hospital services. But it is the starting point for negotiations, especially for self-pay patients.

Recently, the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has mandated that ever hospital in the country that bills CMS for services must release this Chargemaster database as machine readable data.

This website exists to facilitate this policy change. To start, we are releasing a recommended data format for the release of chargemaster data. Eventually, we may also mirror released data here.
